“Yoga is a journey of the self, through the self, to the Self.” — Bhagavad Gita
This is one of my favorite expressions of what the yogic path offers the individual soul. It encapsulates the long, often challenging process of struggle, surrender, and ultimate triumph in such a succinct and powerful way. But how do we get there?
This is where Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras come in. This foundational text outlines an eight-limbed path that guides us toward union with our True Self. It begins with establishing a moral foundation, then moves through purification of body, mind, and ego to prepare for meditation. From there, the journey continues through expansion of vital energy, inward redirection of the senses, focused concentration, meditative bliss, and finally, complete absorption into the Self.
So why am I talking about Patanjali and the eightfold path while introducing you to a Nicaraguan retreat center called Costa Dulce?
Because this sanctuary has been consciously designed to support growth in many of these areas.
Costa Dulce embodies Ahimsa—non-harming—through its commitment to sustainability: harnessing solar energy, conserving water, and supporting a local nonprofit dedicated to protecting and increasing the sea turtle population. (And if you’re not yet aware of how vital sea turtles are to the planet’s ecosystem—including our own survival—make sure to attend one of Turtle Tim’s educational talks!)
In harmony with nature, Costa Dulce also offers daily yoga and surfing—both of which, in my experience, are powerful forms of “meditation in movement.” These practices cultivate Tapas, or disciplined effort, as we train the mind and body in focus, presence, and flow.
Nourishment is another pillar of the experience. The meals here are lovingly prepared using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Every colorful plate is as vibrant visually as it is satisfying to the palate. After just a few days of eating this way, I feel lighter, clearer, and deeply nourished—body, mind, and soul.
Community is also at the heart of Costa Dulce. Shared meals at family-style tables and events like live music and salsa dancing foster meaningful human connection. From the moment you arrive, the warm and welcoming staff make you feel like part of a family. And when we connect with people from around the world—people who are both different and yet deeply familiar—we remember the universal truth of our shared humanity.
But perhaps most importantly, Costa Dulce offers something that’s become increasingly rare: space. Space to breathe. Space to reconnect with nature. And space to return to yourself. Each time I’ve visited, I’ve felt a profound shift—like I’ve taken a giant step forward on my path of Self-discovery.
I leave feeling nourished, grounded, and inspired—not only to live more consciously, but to bring that energy back into my everyday life and show up as the kind of person I want to be in the world.
Because true self-care isn’t just about escape—it’s about remembrance. And there’s no better place to remember who you truly are than a sanctuary designed to support exactly that.
